Avon Inv Doubles U 15Written by: Nigel
Warks clean up at U 15 invitation doubles 23 Jan 2010, St Ursula’s, Bristol
Today’s U 15 Avon Invitation Doubles drew pairs from Yorkshire, Mid Glamorgan, Surrey and Herts, as well as counties near to Bristol. The tournament was played in an excellent spirit, with the players battling hard for the qualifying places to the final rounds. As always with a tournament there were minor glitches, not least one of the Surrey players who didn’t have a lift, and for a while we thought he wasn’t turning up. However, he eventually got a lift, and just as well as he and his partner ended up in the second stage boxes.
Sam Parsons and Matt Close (Warks) won the boys tournament in convincing style, never dropping more than nine points in the group stage, and not giving away many more even in the final, which was against Avon’s Henley Ngan and Peter Wrigglesworth. Sam and Matt won 21 – 11.
In the girls tournament home favourites Jess Hopton and Sally Mortimer got through to the semi finals, but having lost one of their group games they came up against the formidable Warwickshire pair of Til’Shiloh Shaw-Cole and Eve O’Sullivan, where Warks won 21 – 16. The other semi final brought together Charis Wyatt and Faye Brewster from Gloucestershire against the Worcestershire pair, Amy Smith and Megan Griffiths. Amy and Megan won, 21 – 19.
The girls final was won by Til’Shiloh Shaw-Cole and Eve O’Sullivan, beating Amy Smith and Megan Griffiths, 21 – 10.
Thanks to all who helped, especially Jayne Hopton and her energetic team of Tracey and Kath. Also thanks to Josh, Andy, Lynne, and Kirby for additional help. And thanks to all the parents who supported their children, and were tolerant of another long day in a sports hall. Well done everyone
